225 Million Pounds Over 3 Years To Help Poorest Pay Utility Bill Debts

Utility Bills Debt Help

Energy Secretary John Hutton has engineered a deal with the UK’s six biggest energy companies to potentially help the poorest households meet their fuel bills and clear utility bill debts.

Over the next 3 years, an extra £225 million will be found for social assistance programmes, designed to provide financial support to consumers struggling to pay their gas and electricity bills. The UK’s biggest energy firms who aim to help reduce fuel poverty are British Gas, Scottish & Southern, E.On, Scottish Power, NPower and EDF.

MRS PAULINE JONES says

I have just received an electric bill for over £700. When I asked for an explanation from Npower, they stated that it was because my bill had only been estimated for the past 12 months. I asked if they could investigate this, as we are very thrifty with the electricity and only 2 in the household. They firstly put up my direct debit payments to £143 per month, I explained that I could not afford that as my husband had just lost his job as the factory had gone into liquidation. Bad enough, without receiving the bill a few days later. They now say they can reduce it to £97 per month but this is the lowest they can go. Is there any way I can get help with this as even reducing it to £97 is more than I can afford. Please advise.
